Lynn Weaver, Livingston, MT, USA
Sense of place, that ambiguous relationship between humans and their surroundings, has been visually illuminated by photographers for years. When we think of place-based photography in the Western US, the landscape usually takes center stage, shots of natural grandeur and iconic vistas come to represent entire regions.
There's no denying the natural beauty of the West, but for modern-day Westerners, things are messy. The visual serenity of the natural world is routinely interrupted by decaying grain elevators, boxcars graced with graffiti and discarded junk piles. Photographer and designer, Lynn Weaver has decided to turn her lens to the fabricated treasures of her home town, Livingston, Montana. Weaver's year-long quest to capture the essence of Livingston has yielded a fruitful body of work.
Weaver employs a masterful sense of composition to polish seemingly ordinary scenes. Her design instincts and knack for playful exploration are clearly evident. By documenting everyday objects and subtle details of the town, she has shed light on the West's complexities and realities to present a rare sense of place.
